Bryant Starts Off On Good Foot In Title National Championships Bout PDF Print E-mail
By Randy Hammons
Editor at ringside

HOLLY SPRINGS, MS - As expected, decorated amateur boxer Bobby Bryant dominated his opponent on Wednesday (July 1) in the opening night of the Title National Championships at the Holly Springs Multi-Purpose Center.

Bryant, the two-time Title National Champion at 132 and 141 pounds, defeated Arkansas' Dakota Dawson 3-0 in the 154-pound opening match. A left hook to the body from Bryant put Dawson on the mat in the second round. Bryant advanced to meet Missouri's Victor Gathright, who out-pointed Tennessee's Ladarius Miller.

Bryant, from Olive Branch, MS, said it wasn't his most pleasing performance. But it was a win nevertheless.

"I think it was real easy, but at the end of the last round, I got tired," Bryant said. "If I had had full sparring and trained like I would have liked, I would have knocked dude out. I think there will be a rematch because I can do a lot more than what I did tonight. I think it was a pretty good performance."

Bryant fired off combinations to begin the bout and worked to the body before going up to the head. Dawson maintained some distance starting the second round, but Bryant trapped Dawson along the ropes and unloaded to the body just before the knockdown.

In the final round, Bryant fired off three- and four-punch combinations and maintained his effective jab.

Bryant turns 17 on Aug. 7 and is scheduled to participate in the 17 to 34-year-old Open division at the PAL National Championships in San Antonio starting on Oct. 18.

Honors for Bryant include the 2007 Summer Classic and National Junior Golden Glove championships. He is a six-time Regional Junior Olympic champion.
